Cancel a Spanish newspaper or magazine subscription — without the phone battle
Press subscriptions are among the hardest contracts to cancel in Spain: automatic renewals, notice periods ranging from 24 hours to a month, promo prices that explode at renewal, and cancellations that are «phone only». Here is how to do it with proof — in English, without depending on the call.
Why cancelling a Spanish newspaper is so hard
The Spanish press subscription model lives off silent renewal: plans extend automatically for equal periods, and the advance notice — when it arrives at all — is easy to miss. Several major papers offer no cancel button and point you to the subscriber hotline, where retention offers await. The terms usually add two locks: amounts already paid are not refunded, and with digital plans you waive the withdrawal right the moment you start reading.
The promo-price trap
Almost every paper acquires readers with aggressive offers (€1 for the first months, €9–20 for the first year) that renew automatically at the standard rate. There are documented OCU complaints with jumps from about €18 to over €110 a year, without a reminder. The defence is simple: note the renewal date the day you subscribe and send your cancellation within the notice period.
Print vs. digital: two different contracts
The digital and print subscriptions are usually separate products with different cancellation channels and deadlines. It is common to be able to cancel the digital plan online while home delivery requires a call or a letter, with 5 to 30 days' notice. Print promotions with gifts (cookware, gadgets) may also carry a minimum term. Check which plan you actually have before sending anything.
How to cancel with proof
- Find your plan and subscriber number (on the invoice, the welcome email or in the customer area).
- If the title allows online cancellation, try that first: it is free and immediate. Our per-newspaper guides tell you which ones do.
- If not, communicate the cancellation in writing and verifiably: a letter with acknowledgment of receipt fixes the date and content of your request against any notice period. The letter itself is in Spanish — that is what Spanish publishers require — and our generator drafts it for you.
- Don't just cancel the direct debit: without a communicated cancellation the debt keeps accruing. First the verifiable cancellation, then watch the charges.
If they call to keep you
You don't have to justify anything or accept counter-offers. Your cancellation is already on record in writing; the letter our generator produces expressly asks for all handling to be done in writing and states that not answering calls does not suspend the request. If they keep charging anyway, you hold the proof to claim your money back before the company, consumer authorities or a court.

Frequently asked questions
Can a Spanish newspaper force me to call to cancel?
They can insist on the call, but a verifiable written notice puts the date and content of your request on record. Send the cancellation in writing, and if they call to keep you afterwards, you don't have to accept anything: your request has already been communicated and proven.
What notice period do I have to respect?
It depends on the title: some papers work with 24–48 hours, others with 5, 7, 10 or 15 days, and RBA magazines require a full month. Check your terms and send the cancellation with margin; with acknowledgment of receipt you can prove you gave notice in time.
I signed up with a promo — will they renew me at the full price?
Almost always yes: the standard practice is automatic renewal at the current undiscounted rate, and there are documented cases jumping from €18 to over €110 a year. Note the renewal date the day you subscribe and send your cancellation before the notice deadline.
Is cancelling the print subscription the same as the digital one?
No: they are usually separate contracts with separate channels. Several papers let you cancel the digital plan online but require a call or a letter for home delivery, with longer notice periods and — in gift promotions — even minimum terms.
